Abstract

Quality of Life And Social Support of Elderly Patients with Cancer Introduction Elderly cancer patients who had physical and psychological symptoms generally had worse quality of life due to disease process and side effects of treatment and need social support. Objective This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine quality of life and social support of elderly patients with cancer. Methods This pilot study was conducted 75 elderly patients with cancer who treated at oncology clinics in an university hospital in Edirne city, Turkey. A “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)” and EORTC QLQ-C30 were used for data collection. p<0.05 value was accepted as statistically significant. Results The mean age of the patients was 64.69±4.61 years, 29.3% had lung cancer. The mean score of the MSPSS was 55.32±14.78, the global quality of life subscale of EORTC QLQ-C30 was 47.88±23.92. A negative correlation was found between ECOG score and MSPSS score (r= -.332, p= .004), and also between ECOG score and the global quality of life subscale of EORTC QLQ-C30 score (r= -.310, p= .007). A positive correlation was found between age and ECOG score of the elderly cancer patients (r= .228, p= .049). No correlation was found MSPSS total score and the global quality of life subscale of EORTC QLQ-C30 score. Conclusion Social support and quality of life of elderly cancer patients were found at moderate level. As the functional performance worsened, social support and the quality of life worsened too. Oncology nurses should consider social support and life quality of elderly patients with cancer while managing cancer related symptoms.
