BACKGROUND: Stroke constitutes a severe and complex disorder with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. In recent years, genetic factors have been pointed as important risk contributors for stroke pathogenesis. CDKN2A/2B gene has been described in association with the risk of multiple diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and stroke. We aimed to investigate the association of rs2383207 polymorphism, nearby CDKN2A/2B gene, with the susceptibility to Large Artery Atherosclerosis Ischemic stroke (LAA-IS) in Brazilian population. 
METHODS: For the study, 195 patients classified by TOAST criteria, 249 stroke-free controls from Joinville Stroke Biobank were matched by age and gender. Genotypes were determined by TaqMan real-time PCR assay. 
RESULTS: We found a significant difference in the distribution of the rs2383207*A allele frequencies between cases and controls (58% vs 19%; p = 4.66 E-10) and increased risk for LAA-IS due to this allele [OR 2.35 (95% CI = 1.79 - 3.08)]. 
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study correlating the polymorphism rs2383207 with stroke in Brazilian population, which may be useful for understand the genetic role in LAA-IS predisposition.
