Studies with a series of M-TiC(001) and M-CeO2(111) {M= Fe, Co, Ni} surfaces indicate that metal-support interactions can play a very important role for the room temperature activation of methane and its conversion to commodity chemicals at relatively low temperatures (400-550 K). Experiments using ambient pressure XPS indicate that methane dissociates on the M-CeO2(111) systems generating CHx and COx species on the catalyst surface. On the other hand, only CHx species are observed on the M-TiC(001) systems. The results of density-functional calculations show different mechanisms for the activation of methane on the metal-carbide and metal-oxide interfaces. On these interfaces, the methane activation barrier drops from ~ 1.2 eV on a pure metal to less than 0.5 eV. A significant part of the CHx formed on the M-TiC(001) and M-CeO2(111) surfaces recombines to yield ethane or ethylene.
