P-1048-The impact of therapeutic education on quality of life of type 2 diabetic patients in Lebanon

Background: Diabetes type 2 is a chronic metabolic disease that constitutes a quality-of-life burden. Therapeutic patient Education (TPE) enhances the patient involvement and engagement in managing chronic diseases effectively. By applying TPE, Heath outcomes are improved among diabetic patients. 
Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the impact of TPE among Lebanese Diabetic patients on compliance and quality of Life. 
Materials and Methods: A total of 100 diabetic patients (50 experimental, 50 controls) were recruited from a Primary Health Care Center according to selection criteria. TPE aimed at developing patients’ competencies of self-care and coping with Diabetes. The intervention group received the TPE by a multidisciplinary team along with educational material. Compliance was measured by a biological marker HbA1C whereas quality of life was assessed by a validated tool SF-36 at baseline and after three months. The intervention group was followed up every two weeks after the TPE. 
Results: In the intervention group, HbA1C had improved significantly from 8.4 to 6.79 (p<0.01) while it changed slightly in the control from 7.74 to 7.53. The quality of life improved significantly in the intervention group from 56.47 to 77.51 (p<0.01), whereas it regressed significantly in the control group from 60.98 to 53.79 (p<0.01). All the subscales of quality of life including physical functioning, role limitation due to physical health, role limitation due to emotional problems, energy/fatigue, emotional well-being, social functioning, bodily pain, general health have improved significantly in the intervention (p<0.01), while they regressed significantly in the control group (p<0.01) except for perception of general health who remained unchanged less than 50.
Conclusion: Health professionals are best suited to help diabetic patients manage their disease and improve their quality of life. The findings of this study revealed that Therapeutic Patient Education is efficient and can contribute to better compliance and quality-of-life.
