PREVALENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES IN PATIENTS WITH HYPERCALCEMIA

Status of carbohydrate metabolism in patients with hypercalcaemia and the influence of hypercalcemia on the risk of type 2 diabetes continue to be studied last years.
Objective: to study the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in patients with hypercalcemia and in patients without hypercalcemia.
Materials and Methods: continuous survey of 1 207 people, average age 53,9±17,25 (892 women, 315 men) from 18 to 96 years. Examination: total calcium, total protein, creatinine, cholesterol and triglycerides, HbA1C, an analysis of morbidity (osteoporosis, kidney stones, cholelithiasis, ulcer disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular events, cancer, fractures in history). Hypercalcaemia was detected in total calcium level more than 2,65 mmol / L.
Results: hypercalcemia has been found in 31 people, mean age was 58,39 ± 11,6 years, total calcium was 2,72±0,1, HbA1C was 5,89±0,98. Type 2 diabetes was detected in 8 (25,8%) patients with hypercalcemia, HbA1C was 7,1±1,01, and 133 (12.8%) cases with type 2 diabetes were found among patients without hypercalcaemia.
Significant differences was detected in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in patients with hypercalcemia and in patients without hypercalcemia (χ 2= 6,75, p =0,0131).
Conclusion: the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in patients with hypercalcemia was 25,8%. The results of the study show an increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in patients with hypercalcaemia. The results may indicate the influence of hypercalcemia in the frequency of manifestation of type 2 diabetes.
