Recently, there has been growing interest in the complex stratification regimes formed as a binary dispersion of particles dries into a solid film. An accumulation of small particles at the air-film interface has been observed under different conditions and directly contrasts with previously established theory based on the dimensionless Peclet number. Appropriate agreement between stratification theory and experimental results is a critical step to affording control over particle movement, and subsequent stratification, within solidifying films. We present experimental evidence of complex sandwich" stratification configurations where one particle type gathers at both the substrate and air interfaces, as obtained using a novel micro-beam X-ray scattering technique and a linear combination analysis. These data highlight the importance of advanced quantitative experimental techniques to probe stratification systems, as such complex strucutres have been overlooked by surface-dominated techniques.
