Graphical analysis of student discourse in a Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning - Physical Chemistry Classroom (POGIL - PCC) is used to monitor the student - student and student - instructor interactions that form the basis of learning according to social constructivism. Graphs that diagram student - student interactions, are generated by diagramming the oral turn-taking behavior of student discussions in class. The resulting network graphs are characterized by the team’s centralization and reciprocity. Further, student cognitive engagement behaviors are characterized with the ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework. The network graphs and ICAP levels appear to be correlated to specific instructor actions in the classroom. The instructor facilitation moves that lead to more effective interactions and higher engagement will be described.
