Tryptophan derivatives can be condensed with ninhydrin via the Pictet-Spengler reaction. The resultant spirocycle is amenable to Lewis acid-mediated rearrangements that produce a beta-carboline. Derivatization of this beta-carboline has yielded a novel compound.
