Multilayer nanostructures represent an important class of materials with tunable optical and thermal radiative properties that can be leveraged for a wide range of energy applications. We have developed an open-source software packaged called WPTherml that couples rigorous electrodynamics computations to thermal radiation equations and aims to provide a powerful computational design engine for multilayer nanostructures for the wide variety of applications where control of optical and/or thermal radiation properties are paramount. We will present a theoretical framework we have recently developed and implemented in the WPTherml package for optimizing the geometry of such structures that utilizes gradients of various objective functions that are enabled through analytic differentiation of the transfer matrix equations. We demonstrate the usefulness of this method by applying it to the local optimization of many-degree-of-freedom structures for tailored thermal radiation, and the global optimization of few-degree-of-freedom structures for enhanced optical absorption.
