Paper has been intensively used for almost 2000 years as a source for packaging, graphical, and hygiene paper, respectively. Paper is made from renewable raw materials, and it is a flat, highly porous, flexible and foldable but hardly elastic material. It consists of largely randomly arranged and interconnected fibrous basic building blocks with a very wide range of sizes and shapes. Due to the necessity of satisfying our needs more and more from renewable resources in the future, paper as a biogenic, very easily recyclable and technologically optimized material is gaining an increasing attention even for applications beyond traditional needs. The latter progresses from functional paper for sensing applications to paper-based construction materials, and completely recyclable paper materials used in food packaging. These examples have in common that they all require a tailored functionalization of paper (fiber) surfaces for control of chemical and mechanical properties, respectively. To this regard, I will outline recent examples from our group, where different polymers have been used to functionalize and tailor paper (fiber) surface properties to specific needs. Examples include the design of superhydrophobic paper, paper with Janus-type wettability and the use of thin polymer coatings to enhance mechanical properties such as the paper wet-strength.
