The National Science Foundation has designated the concept of “INCLUDES” (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) as one if its ‘Big Ideas’ for the future of the Foundation and for STEM overall. Part of this included support, through launch pilots, of different ways to engage communities. This talk will describe chemistry and science education activities within one such launch pilot, which involved UIC faculty and students in work to identify how their expertise could support different forms of participatory action research within a community with a significant population of underrepresented groups. This approach led to several forms of responsive engagement, including with an environmental justice community, a community-wide planning group examining educational needs, and, on the UIC campus, teaching and learning experiences to bring relevant science knowledge into humanities and social science courses. Data on student engagement and learning outcomes, specific examples of action research in the community (especially focused on water and air quality) and the development of analyses of educational transition points will be discussed.<br/>
