Abstract:<br/>The preparation of acrylic copolymers with cationic, anionic, and nonionic functionality can pose challenges due to the different polymerization rates and solubility characteristics of the constituent monomers.  Zwitterionic copolymers synthesized at 3M possess unique physical and chemical properties and thus are of interest in a wide range of potential applications.  This presentation will describe the synthesis of specialty cationic monomers and the creation of a series of tailor-made zwitterionic specialty copolymers.  The resulting materials can be used in a variety of curable and non-curable systems such as antistatic, antimicrobial, and ink receptive coatings, paint blocking pressure sensitive adhesives, enhanced durability surfaces, and even as dust suppressants.  These novel copolymers can be manufactured and formulated either solvent-free or in aqueous and organic media as determined by the end use.  Several commercial product applications that utilize aqueous zwitterionic amphiphilic polymers will be highlighted.<br/>
