Many of us became inorganic chemists because we enjoyed the colors of transition metal compounds, and marveled at the crystal structures of complex inorganic molecules that exhibit unusual bonding.  Inorganic nanocrystals, too, show beautiful colors, especially ones made of gold.  In this Award Address I will describe our synthetic efforts over the years to obtain gold nanocrystals of controllable size and shape that lead to tunable optical properties.   The brilliant colors of gold nanocrystals are due to their loosely-bound electrons that oscillate coherently upon appropriate illumination (“plasmons”).  The plasmonic properties of gold nanocrystals lead to a host of applications, from catalysis to chemical sensing to photothermal therapy.<br/>
