We have been interested in the use of transition metal complexes as catalysts for the decomposition of formic acid and other low molecular weight carboxylic acids into gaseous products such as CO and H<sub>2</sub> for their use in a low temperature chemical gas generation system.  Investigations of new catalysts for formic acid decomposition has led to the synthesis of well-defined transition metal amide and hydroxide complexes.  In this talk, the catalytic properties of this family of compounds will be discussed as will addition of HX bonds to metal amide complexes.  The hydroxide complexes display particularly interesting reactivity, including aldehyde-water shift reaction chemistry, as well as catalysis of nitrile and other hydration reactions.  The talk will focus on the chemistry of various Mn, Ru and Ni complexes.
