Over the last 18 years, the Mindiola-Baik collaboration has explored many organometallic complexes capable of activating various chemical bonds – many were interesting, some were surprising and few were useful. Among them is the C–H bond of methane, which is considered the most difficult among the C–H bonds to activate. In this talk, I will review some of the adventurous reactions that were studied over the years within the long-standing collaboration between the Mindiola and Baik laboratories and highlight some of the lessons we learned about how to activate C–H bonds in general and methane in particular.
