This collaborative project examines student engagement in an analytical chemistry setting in concert with an integrative learning environment. As a means to improve education in analytical chemistry and deepen students’ application of it to their field of interest, case studies are developed for the quantitative and instrumental analysis courses to promote real-world critical thinking, problem solving and written communication skills in undergraduate students majoring in chemistry. The design and development of a scenario-based laboratory learning environment enables students to develop and demonstrate proficiency utilizing a growth mindset model. Based on the case study laboratory subject matter, argumentative style writing appropriate to the discipline is included as a learning activity. These signature writing assignments demonstrate the students’ abilities to analyze problems in ways which require them to examine, evaluate, and compile disciplinary knowledge within an evidence based scenario writing situation. This type of assessment sustains student perseverance intrinsically motivating them to seek out content learning gains in a rich co-curricular framework.
