Until now, Mxenes were synthesized from MAX phases by selective etching of the “A” layer of MAX by HF solution. The aqueous etching process results in O/F terminating groups in the final products. Herein, we report, for the first time, the synthesis of a 2D metal-carbon ternary fluoride (Mxene, Ti3C2F2) through selective etching of Si by fluorine gas from Ti3SiC2 (MAX). Similarly, Mxene (Ti3C2-O2/F2) synthesized from Ti3AlC2 was transformed into 2D TiOF2 sheets via fluorination with superior electrochemical performance.
