Lithium ion batteries have been widely applied in electronics and electric vehicles. Heterogeneity between LCO nanoparticles can affect batteries’ performance and need to be understood for development of safer and more efficient batteries. Lithium ions are difficult to image and methods that track lithium ions usually relies heavily on specialized equipment (EELS, neutron scattering, X-ray tomography) that make it difficult to operate in situ. Fluorescence microscopy is used as an alternative convenient method to track lithium ions during the oxidation of LCO cathode material. A fluorophore has been developed to selectively bind to lithium ions, revealing their location and movement in real time by fluorescence during the oxidation of LCO nano particles. A variety of LCO particles with different lithium efflux kinetics are observed, presented in this study.
