This talk will present a biodiesel laboratory experience which connects previously published biodiesel exercises in an intentionally scaffolded experience that spans three courses: general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry with possible connections to additional upper division courses. This specialized style of laboratory with intensive and authentic cross-course connections teaches students how to collaborate, write, and think like professional scientists. The biodiesel topic provides an opportunity for students to engage in conversation and experimentation around environmental impact, a topic that many find important and relevant to their own lives. Data comparing this cross-course collaborative design to traditional laboratories will be discussed along with the faculty training and logistical aspects necessary for implementation of the experience.
