Beginning in the summer of 2018, the Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI) at Seton Hall University established the goal of bringing our entire two-semester organic chemistry laboratory sequence into alignment with the tenets of green chemistry. After approximately a year of researching, piloting, and modifying greener laboratory experiments both developed independently and drawn from the literature, an entirely revamped curriculum was implemented beginning in September of 2019. As we have found, there are few (if any) experiments that can be considered 100% green; in fact, our goal quickly shifted to being “greenER”, and to that end, we have had varying degrees of success. Our experience has shown that shifting to a greater emphasis on green chemistry involves much more than simply changing reagents and reaction conditions. In this talk, we will discuss outcomes for some of the challenges we expected as well as several unexpected obstacles we are working to address.
