Little is known about postsecondary inorganic chemistry laboratory instruction beyond anecdotal reflections and published instructional laboratory experiments. Inorganic chemistry lecture courses are highly varied across the country; inorganic chemistry laboratory courses likely mirroring this trend with a variety of topics, skills, and structures incorporated into laboratory instruction. However, there have been no broad investigations of inorganic chemistry laboratory instruction, such as content covered, instructors’ beliefs about instruction, or the number and type of upper-level inorganic chemistry laboratory courses. To this end, the Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists (IONiC) administered a survey in Fall 2019 to postsecondary inorganic chemistry faculty members in the United States to capture such information with the goals of characterizing and understanding the current state of inorganic chemistry laboratory instruction. Preliminary survey results will be offered to foster conversations about current practices in inorganic chemistry laboratory instruction, future work to improve laboratory instruction, as well as course-, programmatic-, and disciplinary-level implications.
