There is a significant need for developing a sensitive, selective, efficient and yet inexpensive method for rapid molecular diagnostic tests, which could be accessible to a resource-limited population with lack of access to proper diagnostic and healthcare. The aim of this research is to develop an inexpensive yet sensitive nucleic acid detection method that utilizes DNA-conjugated carbon-dots. The method offers DNA detection by using portable, paper-based analytical tools that are made of inexpensive materials such as nitrocellulose membrane and carbon dots. DNA-conjugated carbon dots were prepared by using EDC-NHS coupling technique and were utilized to capture the target DNA in samples. In the subsequent step, the target DNA/DNA-conjugated carbon dot complexes are incubated with a nitrocellulose membrane that contains ‘detection’ DNAs in order to separate the bound and free carbon dots and to quantify the amount of target DNA in the samples. This simple procedure allows for the detection of DNAs without specialized equipment and therefore it can be used even in resource-limited environments.<br/>
