Recognizing that all undergraduate students can benefit from professional development, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at St. Mary’s College of Maryland has integrated professional skill building exercises throughout our chemistry and biochemistry curricula. We used a backward design approach, thinking first about desired student learning objectives followed by the design of specific activities for different course levels. Professional skill development starts with the first required course for both majors, General Chemistry I, and continues through the sophomore level Organic Chemistry courses and upper level courses in Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry. Skills focused on include scientific identity, growth mindset, networking, personal statements, and resumes. Specific examples of the student work associated with this curriculum will be included in a four part series during the afternoon session.
