We have developed a series of courses that develop students’ professional skills and improve retention through building a departmental community of faculty and majors of all years. This multi-semester sequence provides an opportunity for students to develop information literacy, oral communication, and written communication skills in their chosen field. The sequence begins by introducing first year students to each other, the faculty and resources on campus that will help them be successful. First year students learn about the research that is being conducted on campus by visiting research labs and attending poster sessions presented by upper classmates. In the second year, students begin reading scientific journal articles and attend journal clubs presented by seniors. They also attend senior research seminars and are encouraged to ask basic questions. By the junior year all students are in a research group so they write a research proposal and present a poster on their proposed research. In the fall semester the seniors each present a scientific journal article and field questions from the students and faculty. In the spring semester the seniors present their research in the form of a poster and oral presentation. Through a gradual increase in the role students take in the course, they build confidence and improve their communication skills. By the end of the sequence students are bursting with thoughtful questions after a presentation. These student-centered courses are a progressive sequence with the goal of better preparing our students for their future education and career. Through the connections made in this course we have improved our retention and students’ attitude towards chemistry and research. The progression of this course will be presented.
