Copper (Cu) is one of the most abundant and less toxic transition metals compared to metals lower on the periodic table. Rich in redox chemistry, Cu is able to undergo oxidation/reduction with O2 or H2O2 as oxidant to perform organic transformations. Inspired by the reactivity of previously describe bidentate Cu complexes, our lab has synthesized new tridentate Cu-complexes equipped with tunable hydrogen bonding, which enable stabilization of Cu-OH- complexes. In this project, tridentate Cu-complexes are made with different ligand scaffolds and anions, which give various hydrogen bond lengths and angles. Three oxidation states of the system are observed by CV and different redox potentials of the complexes are shown with different ligands and anions. Titration with FcPF6 and Co(cp)2 in uv-vis shows the existence of these three oxidation states as well as good reversibility. Phenol oxidation with high-oxidation-state complexes and 4-X-2,6-DTBP shows formation of phenol radical and continuous HAT from complexes. After in-depth study of the mechanism, we will turn our focus onto the catalytic properties of these complexes.
