Some advanced aircraft designs put high heat loads on parts of the aircraft. One concept for handling the heat safely is to cool these parts with flowing fuel. However, thermophysical methods that rely solely on the fuel’s heat capacity or even phase change, such as strategically evaporating fuel, become insufficient as heat load increases. A significant improvement in fuel heat sink capacity could be achieved by allowing controlled endothermic reactions to take place in the fuel before reaching the combustor. The chemistry of this approach is complicated by undesired side reactions, that might lead to the formation of solid deposits, negatively affect heat transfer, and even clog fuel supply and cooling channels.<br/>In this work we attempt to better understand the chemistry involved in fuel cracking in these cooling channels through the development of a chemical kinetic mechanism for a surrogate jet fuel. Focus is placed on improving our group’s open-source software, Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG), in order to better calculate kinetics parameters and generate the relevant reaction pathways. Of particular interest are the reaction pathways leading to formation of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene, which involve pressure-dependent chemically activated reactions which we have calculated using the new open-source software package Arkane developed by our group, which will be briefly described. By improving RMG’s capabilities, we generated a detailed kinetic model for the pyrolysis of our surrogate fuel and present our results in comparison to experimental data from literature.
