Aggregation caused quenching has been a critical issue because it can be detrimental for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) where solid states of luminophores have been used. Recently, aggregation induced emission (AIE) has been gaining much attention in various luminescent materials because of their enhanced emission in condensed phases, mainly caused by the limitation of intramolecular motion (vibration and/or rotation) in aggregate states. There are various organic molecules showing AIE properties while a few metal complexes (mostly rare earth and noble metals) have been observed. However, rare earth element-based phosphors are expensive and in limited supply; thus, developing cost-effective earth abundant metal based phosphors exhibiting AIE is an essential part of ongoing research. Herein, we report that first new Sn (IV) fluoride complex (i.e. Snq2F2, q= 8-hydroxyquinoline) exhibits AIE property, which shows strong, blue shifted emission in solid state and weak emission in solution. Interestingly, Snq2Cl2 complex does not show such properties. Furthermore, the fluorinated Sn (IV) complex significantly enhance photoluminescence emission compared to a chlorinated Sn (IV) complex. Clearly, fluorine coordinated with Sn metal center plays a critical role in enhancing emission properties as well as AIE. We investigated the structural, optical, and electrochemical properties of two systems to understand the role of fluorine in the complex.
