Solid state lighting (SSL) has led to the development of efficient phosphor converted LED (pcLED) systems. An important goal of pcLED is the ability to tune the color of the phosphor to modify the scototopic to photopic ratio with the change of background light levels (day vs. night). To achieve a tunable red to green ratio, the development of down-shifting phosphors for pcLED systems which employ excitation dependent spectral features in a two-color phosphor composed of earth abundant material is an important goal for next generation lighting technologies.  An additional goal is the design of such materials as nanocrystal phosphors to further enhance the phosphor performance through the ability to incorporate the material into a lens matrix, as well as reduce losses due to scattering. In this presentation, we demonstrate the synthesis and isolation of a lanthanide doped ZnAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> nanospinel phosphor passivated by hexafluoroacetylacetonate that exhibits changes in the spectral features upon ligand and direct Tb(III) excitation. The relative intensities of the Ln(III) transitions provide information to the coupling that is occurring between the Tb(III) and Eu(III). Donor lifetime decays provide insight into the coupling and the orientation factor, giving information into the octahedral tilting within the nanospinel lattice. The role of octahedral tilting was evaluated by manipulation of overall Ln(III) concentration and elucidated in the Tb(III) lifetimes. Optical characterization will include lifetime, photoluminescence, quantum yields, and transient absorption.
