Even though more than 90% of the primary energy consumption in the world involves the generation of heat, efforts to design new materials for energy storage have largely focused on the development of electrochemical systems to store electricity and of chemical transformations to store energy in the form of a fuel, while the direct storage of thermal energy has received comparatively little attention.  Thermal energy storage offers many potential advantages over other energy storage solutions, including high efficiencies, simple system designs, and low costs.  As such, the development of advanced materials that can store high capacities of thermal energy and deliver it on demand can play a large role in facilitating the more efficient and sustainable utilization of energy.  This talk will discuss the design of metal-organic materials with tunable, high-enthalpy phase transitions for thermal energy storage.  A particular focus will be on understanding the structural and chemical features that control the thermodynamics of order-disorder transitions in coordination solids.
