Metal-organic materials have emerged as leaders in the area of adsorptive hydrocarbon separations. The separation of unsaturated hydrocarbons from saturated hydrocarbons is a particularly important process due our reliance on unsaturated hydrocarbons as chemical feedstocks. The difficultly in the separation of these types of molecules is a result of their similar physical properties which makes them ideal candidates for more energy efficient adsorptive separation processes. Recently, metal organic-frameworks have shown promise for olefin/paraffin separations via selective interactions at coordinatively-unsaturated metal centers. Although ruthenium has largely been used in molecular systems to leverage strong and selective interactions with pi-orbitals, ruthenium-based metal-organic materials have been a rarity. Ruthenium-based porous materials with open Ru(II/III) sites are even more uncommon. This talk will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of three different materials, Ru-HKUST-1 and two ruthenium(II/III) coordination cages. Surprisingly, the discrete cages have surface areas as high as the three-dimensional framework. Single-component isotherms indicate the molecular materials display significantly higher ethylene adsorption enthalpies as a result of favorable M-hydrocarbon interactions. Neutron powder diffraction was used to determine the binding sites of these gases within Ru-HKUST-1 elucidate possible interactions in the cages.
