Iron nitride can be synthesized in several different phases depending on reaction and processing conditions. Notably, the different phases have unique magnetic properties, some of which could find application in materials requiring soft magnets. However, synthesis and isolation of phase-pure iron nitride still remains a challenge. We have developed methods to synthesize several phases of iron nitride including Fe2N, Fe3N, Fe4N, and Fe24N10. The synthesis, magnetic properties, and incorporation of these materials into soft magnetic composites will be discussed.
