Redox flow batteries offer a compelling engineering framework to provide long-duration energy storage, but current barriers include the high cost of vanadium electrolyte and the low performance of alternative electrolyte chemistries. Flow battery electrolytes should exhibit high power, high efficiency, and long cycle life, while also being comprised of inexpensive and earth-abundant materials. This talk describes how the use of inexpensive chelating agents can be used to control the redox potential and kinetics of inexpensive transition metals, providing high-performance and high-voltage electrolyte for redox flow batteries.
