Cobalt (IV) complex of 1,6,9,14-Tetraazacyclodotriaconta-1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 31-Tetradecene(Civel) and non-complexed 1,6,9,14-tetraaza-3,4,11,12-tetrahydroxyl-cyclodotriaconta-1, 5, 7 , 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 31-tetradecene (Jicvel) were synthesized. The ligands were observed to exist in complex of the selenium produced during oxidation of neocuproine to give 1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9- dicarbaldehyde. The civel ligand was refluxed with Co2+ion which oxidized to Co4+in the complex through the action of selenium element sitting right in the cavity of the ligand. Jicvel ligand was prepared through benzoin condensation of 1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9- dicarbaldehyde. The structures of the ligands and the complex were elucidated using results obtained from NMR (1HNMR, 13NMR, HHCOSY, HMBC and HSQC), FTIR, HPLC and UV-visible analysis. The UV-visible results revealed that the ligands are not completely conjugated. The Co-Civel and Jicvel are of Orthorhombic and Cubic crystal system with cell volumes of 1162.05 A3 and 249.06 A3 respectively. The Crystal Field Stabilisation Energy (CFSE) of Co-civel complex calculated showed-11174cm-1 and the prediction using Ultra-Violet analysis results, Lewis hard/soft acid-base and Linus pauling’s electroneutrality principles proposed the possible structures of the complexes to be [Co(civel)Cl2]2+. Antimicrobial analysis of the ligands and the complex on Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger showed activity against gram positive bacteria and fungi but none against gram negative.Their reaction mechanisms were proposed following the method used for their synthesis. The ligands are of are strong field and they as well as the cobalt complex ligands can have application in complexation, catalysis and in drug formulationjust as their tetraaza macrocyclic counterparts.
