Understanding the qualitative and quantitative changes occurring for molecular species interacting with materials is of great importance for designing and controlling interfacial and intercalative chemistry in a plethora of fields ranging from medicine to energy. However, finding appropriate combinations of material and molecule that allow for investigation is often challenging, as many traditional spectroscopic characterization methods face significant challenges in working with materials instead of fluid solutions. In this work, Ru(bpy)32+ is incorporated in MOF structures and is analyzed by various spectroscopic methods in order to determine how the characteristics of the coordination complexes are altered or maintained when constrained inside the vacant core of a MOF. A variety of synthetic methods for MOF formation are performed, leading to well-studied differences in the MOF morphology. This study investigates if the incorporation rates and Ru(bpy)32+ loading concentrations can be controlled through reaction conditions as well as if changes in MOF particle size or morphology influences photophysical characteristics of the encapsulated Ru(bpy)32+. The well-known photophysical properties of Ru(bpy)32+ provide an appropriate experimental handle for measuring any subtle differences that may occur upon incorporation into the vacant MOF core and SEM images establish the particle size and morphology of the MOF/Ru(bpy)32+ structures.
