<br/>Biological activity and catalytic properties belong among the many applications coordination complexes with chelating organic ligands and transition metals are studied for. The focus of this research is on polydentate N-oxide ligands containing pyridine N-oxide fragment. Understanding how the presence of the N-oxide influences the characteristics of formed complexes gives insight into their functionality. The formation and properties of a tetradentate N-oxide Schiff-base ligand (poxphen), a product of condensation of one equivalent o-phenylenediamine and two equivalents 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde N-oxide (poxal), is the subject of this study. However, the direct synthesis has provided 2-(2-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine N-oxide instead of poxphen in a low yield. Poxphen has been synthesized in a two-step process. First, one equivalent o-phenylenediamine reacted with one equivalent poxal in the presence of sodium hydroxide to create the tridentate Schiff-base ligand poxpam. This has been reacted with additional equivalent of poxal in the presence of sodium hydroxide under an inert, nitrogen gas, atmosphere to yield the target tetradentate N-oxide Schiff-base ligand, poxphen. A complex of poxphen has also formed in a template synthesis using two equivalents of poxal with one equivalent of o-phenylenediamine and one equivalent of an M(II) salt, such as copper(II) nitrate, copper(II) chloride, cobalt(II) chloride, etc. Complexation of poxphen with copper(II) nitrate has produced the same complex as the template synthesis. Perfecting these synthetic pathways along with the full characterization of poxphen and its metallic complexes will be presented.
