The goal of this project is to synthesize a polydentate chelating ligand (L1) capable of forming dinuclear complexes. The built in N-oxide groups provide a bridging capability to the ligand L1, and it separates a softer donor site, [MIIN2O2] chromophore, from a harder site, [MIIIO4] chromophore, where MII could be a 3d transition metal and MIII could be a lanthanide. In the first synthesis step, 2-methoxy-6-methylpyridine was oxidized to yield a mixture of 2-methoxy-6-methylpyridine N-oxide (L2) and 1-hydroxy-6-methyl-2(1H)-pyridinone) (L3). When complexed with various transition metals, these complexes yielded 10 new complexes with composition such as [Cu(L3)2], [Cu(L2)2(H2O)2]Cl4, [Zn(L3)2(H2O)], [Zn(L2)2]Br2, and [Co(L3)2(H2O)], structures of which were analyzed via X-ray crystallography. While the first route of synthesis yielded interesting results, it proved to be ineffective for the synthesis of L1. An alternative procedure was proposed that starts with the protection of the aldehyde group in 6-methoxy-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde followed by its oxidation to yield 6-methoxy-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde N-oxide. Condensing two equivalents of this ligand should yield the ligand L1. Details of synthesis, characterization, and crystallographic results will be presented.
