The metal(II) cations, Manganese through Zinc, have been reacted with mixed phosphine-amine ligands of the type CyP(CH2NHPh)2 (where Cy = C6H11 and Ph =C6H5), and related cyclized species. The metals have been reacted under inert atmosphere conditions in order to avoid oxidation of the metal and the ligand. Both metal(II) chlorides and metal(II) acetates have been used with acetonitrile or dimethylformamide as the solvent.The phosphorus-nitrogen heterocyclic ligands tend to behave like alkylphosphines. Structural characterization of the square planar nickel complex shows that the ligand is coordinated through the phosphorus, with the amine nitrogens bent away from the metal center. Efforts to increase the flexibility of the ligand in order to enable nitrogen coordination will be discussed.
