We describe a radically different industry–academia collaboration between the School of Chemistry in the University of Nottingham and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) aiming to train students in drug discovery research and give them experience of medicinal chemistry as it is practiced in industry. In a unique project, final year MSci Chemistry students carried out research in a project, directed towards the discovery of potent and selective αvβ6 integrin inhibitors to treat IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis). The presentation will briefly describe the philosophy of the collaboration, highlighting the challenges involved in running such a teaching/research project and show progress made towards identification of a series of novel inhibitors with potency towards various RGD Integrins, which may have utility as in a range of fibrotic diseases. Using compound C8 described in the literature as an avb1 selective inhibitor as a template, the presentation will show progress made towards a series of synthetically tractable inhibitors with appropriate drug-like physical properties and activity across a range of av integrins.
