Heterogeneous catalysis has advanced in many occasions by accumulated knowledge, good intuition and trial and error. Today, advances on materials synthesis and characterization together with spectroscopic techniques, kinetics  and molecular modelling allow to study molecular interactions between reactants and the catalyst surface allowing a better understanding of the catalytic phenomena. We will show how it is possible to design and produce solid catalysts that reach industrial applications, starting from the fundamental knowledge developed in the laboratory. We will illustrate that methodology for solid acid and metal catalysts. More specifically, we will show the ab initio synthesis of zeolites for specific carbon rearrangements and carbon-carbon bond formation reactions, as well as the synthesis of metal clusters and nanoparticles to catalyze hydrogenations- dehydrogenation.
