Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), coupled with renewable energy resources, has the potential to produce value-added chemicals while mitigating CO2 emissions. Among the various CO2RR pathways, the simultaneous production of CO and H2 (syngas) with tunable CO/H2 ratios has been considered a promising pathway because the obtained syngas can be subsequently utilized for producing value-added chemicals through existing thermochemical processes, such as the Fischer-Tropsch and methanol synthesis reactions. Using a combination of kinetic studies, in situ characterization and DFT calculations, this presentation will discuss Pd-based catalysts to achieve the selective conversion of CO2 to syngas, with Pd-H being identified as the active sites under reaction conditions [1,2]. Several Pd-M bimetallic catalysts and carbide-supported Pd catalysts will also been demonstrated to reduce the Pd loading while optimizing the CO2RR activity and CO/H2 ratios. The net-reduction of CO2 using mass and energy balances will also be discussed for the hybrid process involving electrocatalytic CO2RR to syngas followed by thermocatalytic syngas conversion to methanol [5].
