To help shift energy use to clean renewable fuels, expensive platinum in alkaline fuel cells must be replaced with robust non-precious-metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. Co-Mn spinels have been intensively investigated and were shown to carry out the oxygen reduction reaction at low overpotential. Co-Mn layered double hydroxide platelets were grown on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets and converted to a Mn-Co spinel/RGO composite through calcination. This avoids restacking of the graphene sheets and aggregation of Co-Mn spinel particles. Both composites have been analyzed and imaged through XRD, SEM/EDS and TEM/EDS. The Mn-Co spinel/RGO composites will be further tested via rotating disk electrode voltammetry and membrane electrode assembly testbeds and the results will be reported at the meeting.
