Emerging strategies to fight deactivation of molecular electrocatalysts are presented. In particular, our group’s recent work on defining the electrochemical windows of various metallo-cages and their merits to encapsulate and stabilize molecular electrocatalysts are discussed. The influence of charge, key structural features and types of chemical bonds are highlighted, to aid in controlling the impact of encapsulation and immobilization on activity and stability of transition-metal molecular electrocatalysts.
