Nanomaterials are typically used in the field of membrane technology to impart a desired characteristic on the membrane so as to enhance selectivity of the membrane and increase the life span of the membrane. Photocatalytic membrane processes generate oxygen-reactive radicals under irradiation by light that could degrade pollutants in feed solutions. Phosphorene is a recently discovered two-dimensional material that shows great promise as a photocatalyst because it can generate reactive oxygen species (singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals). The main objective of this collaborative research was to develop and validate environmentally safe nanomaterial-based approaches for treatment of drinking water including degradation of per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFAS). Among PFAS that used, are representatives of long-chain PFAS including perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) as well as newer short-chain PFASs, such as GenX. PFAS are surfactant chemicals commonly found in household and commercial products, but they are also very persistent in the environment and are known human carcinogens. They are very resistant to traditional drinking water treatment technologies and hence a reactive membrane that can degrade and remove these harmful chemicals during the treatment process will be worthwhile. In this research, phosphorene was fabricated using liquid exfoliation of black phosphorus, and membranes were fabricated via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Phosphorene was physically incorporated into the membrane during the fabrication process. The membranes were characterized using several microscopic and analytical techniques and finally tested for the degradation of PFAS in solution.<br/>
