Water-lean CO2 capture solvents show promise as a potential liquid absorber for the post combustion CO2 capture from flu gas due to their high CO2 uptake, high chemical specificity and low regeneration costs when compare with aqueous amines. Molecular Dynamics simulations first predicted that, upon CO2 binding, these liquids become nanostructured with domains of unreacted neutral molecules coexisting with domains of CO2 bound ionic species. These predictions have been subsequently confirmed by neutron and X-ray scattering and time-of-Flight Secondary Ionization Mass spectrometry imaging. These measurements show show a hierarchical structure to these domains that extends over 100s of nm. We will show that this has critical ramifications for the bulk viscosity of these liquids, CO2 diffusion and the apparent breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relations in these solvents and well as their wettability onto packing distinctly different packing materials such as steel and plastics. Finally, we show how modification of the chemical structure can suppress undesirable properties, like high viscosity at high CO2 loading, and retain desirable properties like high CO2 uptake and wettability of inexpensive packing materials.
