As one of the most promising anode materials for Li-ion storage, silicon (Si) has been intensively explored due to its natural abundance, high theoretical capacity and low delithiation potential. However, the extreme volume change of Si during charge/discharge process results in the pulverization and rapid capacity decay. Numerous studies have been devoted to improving the performance of Si-based anodes. Unfortunately, the reported approaches are complex, high-cost or non-sustainable, which restricts the practical applications of Si-based anodes. Herein, we demonstrate an efficiency and versatile strategy for the synthesis of Si-based anodes using low-cost gelatin and Si nanoparticles as precursors via conventional slurry coating and low-temperature pyrolysis. The gelatin-derived carbon not only acts as a conductive skeleton to enhance the electron/ion transfer but also acts as a functional binder to accommodate the Si expansion and immobilize Si on the current collector via dual-interfacial bonding. Without additional binder and conductive agent, the Si-based anode exhibits high initial columbic efficiency (85.3%), high capacity (3160 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1), good rate capability (1613 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1) and long cycling performance (1485 mAh g–1 after 250 cycles at 1 A g–1). Consequently, an assembled Li-ion capacitor utilizing the Si-based anode exhibits high energy density (213 Wh kg–1), high power density (22.3 kW kg–1) and long lifetime, showing good prospects for practical application.
