Marine mussels provide interesting adhesive systems that master their attachment onto virtually any hard surface under the hostile conditions of the waves wept intertidal zone of the seashores by accurately mediating adhesion and cohesion in their holdfast. While mechanisms of adhesion were investigated throughout the last decades, the presented research aims to integrated novel mechanism to control and modulate cohesion in artificial mussel-foot proteins<br/>The mussel-inspired adhesives will be generated in an enzyme activated polymerization process of peptide-based macromonomers and mimic the adhesive behavior through cystenylDopa-connectivities that are produced in the polymerization process. Besides the contribution of Dopa to adhesion, the role for cohesion is increasingly recognized. The latter occurs either non-covalently by metal ions (e.g. Fe<sup>3+</sup>) cross-linking of Dopa, π−π/π-cation interaction or via a set of reaction mechanisms leading to covalent Dopa cross-linking. In this research, cohesion will be controlled and modulated by incorporation of switchable β-sheet segments into the main sequence of the polymer that complement the adhesive behavior by inducing inner secondary structure formation and contribute to under water gluing performance.
