Continual drilling and well completion technical advances are enabling hydrocarbon extraction from numerous unconventional reservoirs throughout North America. Selecting the most appropriate drilling and completion technology to apply is generally based on the cost of service coupled with a well performance metric. Environmental and social impacts resulting from unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir developments in different geographical locations are difficult to determine. Moreover, we know of no tool to that enables multiple KPI analysis and scenario comparison in a quick and comparative manner from different drilling and well completion technologies.<br/><br/>We have developed a software platform that calculates 19 environmental and social metrics (emissions) during the upstream processes including well drilling, completion and production. The metrics include engine combustion emissions, carbon dioxide, noise, dust, chemical hazards, water and energy consumption, vehicular traffic and proximity to social receptors. The phases of upstream development extend from wellsite preparation through the productive life of the well. The emissions are calculated at more than 100 nodes representing different steps in the life of a well.<br/><br/>Examples are provided applying this stewardship tool in selecting upstream unconventional well development strategies. Results visualization and analysis lead to tradeoff decisions regarding performance and both environmental and social footprint.
