During the boom of energy development, in the form of oil extraction in western North Dakota (approximately 2005-2015), there was an increase in rural gravel road usage resulting in increased dust emissions.  During this time there was a push to quantify dust, determine impacts, and find useful and cost efficient ways to abate the dust.  Additionally, there have been efforts to find a beneficial utilization of oil-well produced waters. This presentation will highlight work from five research studies conducted during the boom to determine: road dust production, impact on wetlands and crop production, effectiveness of oil-well produced water to serve as a dust abatement technique, and the implications this could have on clay binders and ultimately road structure.  Results indicate that there was large increases of 355% in dust loading near the road (10m) in energy impacted areas when compared to areas without energy development.  However, dust greatly decreased further from the road edge, as there was only a 46% increase in dust loading 40 m from the road. Oil-well produced water was not effective as a road dust abatement technique when compared to control and the standard practice of magnesium chloride.  Depending on the electrical conductivity of the produced water there is potential for increased dispersion of clay road binders.  Information from this presentation is useful to managers, regulators, scientists, researchers, and industry professionals considering the impacts of oil production, generation and impact of road dust, and use of produced water as a road dust abatement.  <br/>
