Pharmaceuticals and personal care products are contaminants of emerging concern that have been detected at low levels in wastewater and surface water. A high percentage of oral medications pass through the body relatively unchanged, are excreted, and may find their way to the water supply. Water treatment facilities are not required to monitor or report on these substances. Illicit drug use continues to increase, especially with the increase in opioid abuse. Amphetamine-type stimulants and cocaine are also still prevalent. Our research focuses on detection and quantification of several drugs in municipal wastewater of a micropolitan city in Middle Tennessee. In addition, we are monitoring wastewater before, during, and after events that result in a temporary increase in population.
