In this presentation, an experiment designed for an undergraduate inorganic chemistry lab will be discussed. The laboratory is focused on the synthesis of the pyridine-sulfates of nickel, copper and zinc. The nature of these compounds and their historical context in the Werner-Jørgensen controversy was first presented to students. Students then performed analytical studies, by-hand calculations and computer-based calculations to predict the structures of the d8, d9 and d10 complexes. At the end of the experiment, students were given the crystallographic data to compare their predictions with the real structures. The experiment and the experience from teaching it will be discussed during the presentation.
